Happy Birthday Humphry Repton!! The English Landscape Architect was born in 1752. He originally set out to be a textile merchant but eventually combined his drawing and gardening skills to become a landscape gardener (his term). Repton was known for using monuments, architecture, and natural features such as mountains, that were planned into his designs and important elements viewed in the distance. He became quite proficient at sketching clients’ gardens and overlaying the sketch with his design for a new look. He produced a set of “Red Books” which had many designs with overlays. It caught on and he was quite successful. He created themed gardens, formal gardens, trellis work, etc. Below is an example of his before and after designs.
