His father set him up to be a merchant but his did not suit the dreamer Inness, so he went abroad and was influenced by English landscape painters. Though it was slow going, he returned to America to become a painter. He was intent on creating paintings depicting harmony in nature through color and tone. His colors are cool, his forms soft.
